Most men's groups die within the first year - not from lack of interest, but from lack of structure. A group that sharpens men is built on purpose, consistency, and a culture that refuses to let men drift. Here is how to start one that lasts.
Why So Many Groups Stall
A group without a clear purpose becomes a social club. Without accountability, it becomes a complaint session. Without consistency, it fades. The groups that change men are the ones with a mission: to know Christ, sharpen one another, and multiply into other men.
Scripture"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing."
Hebrews 10:24-25
Start Small and Intentional
You do not need a crowd. Two or three faithful men is enough to begin. Jesus invested deeply in a few, and that few changed the world. Start with the men God has already placed around you and build depth before width.
Mission Squads
In Kingdom Men on Mission, a Mission Squad is a small group of 4-6 men who meet regularly for accountability, prayer, and mission. The size is intentional - small enough to be known, large enough to sharpen. Each squad answers the same weekly questions to keep the group honest and moving.
A Structure That Works
- 1Meet weekly at a fixed time - consistency beats convenience
- 2Open with prayer and a brief Scripture
- 3Each man answers the squad questions honestly
- 4Set one action step for the week
- 5Close by praying for each other by name
The Weekly Squad Questions
- What was your biggest win?
- Where did you struggle?
- What are you avoiding?
- What is God showing you?
- What will you complete before we meet again?
Protect the Culture
Culture is what a group does when no one is watching. Establish it early: Jesus first, honesty over performance, confidentiality, and a commitment to action. One man who treats it as a social club will pull the whole group down. Invite men who want to grow, not just gather.
Character Before Platform
The same value that shapes Kingdom Men on Mission shapes a healthy squad. The men who lead the group should be the men most willing to be honest, serve, and go first into the hard conversation. Leadership in a squad is earned through consistency, not assigned by personality.
How to Launch
- 1Invite 2-4 men personally - do not post a general call
- 2Set a fixed weekly time for the first 90 days
- 3Decide on a Scripture or book to go through
- 4Lead the first meeting yourself - go first
- 5After 90 days, ask each man to invite one more
Common Questions
What if men stop showing up?+
Expect some attrition - it is normal. Keep the bar high rather than lowering it to keep numbers up. A small, committed group outlasts a large, uncommitted one. Recruit slowly and intentionally.
Should the group be at my church?+
It can be, but it does not have to be. Many strong groups start outside formal church structures. If you are part of a church, honor your leadership and keep them informed, but do not let logistics stop you from gathering men.
